Dental Tourism: Having Dental Implants in the Philippines
A dental implant is the best long-term solution to replace missing teeth. Unfortunately, most people cannot afford dental implants especially if you live in countries where even the cost of basic dental care is expensive. For this reason, more and more people are traveling abroad to countries like the Philippines to have their dental implants done.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are small titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jaw to replace the roots of missing teeth. Once the titanium posts heals and integrates into your jawbone, an artificial tooth or implant crown is fixed onto the implant.
A dental implant can replace a single missing tooth by utilizing a crown or it can replace several missing teeth with in an implant-supported bridge. When all the teeth are missing, an implant-supported complete denture can also be used.
Advantage of Dental Implants:
- Better appearance: Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
- Better eating: Dental implants function like your real teeth and allows you to bite and chew food properly.
- Better speech: Dental implants are fixed and will not fall or slip like dentures when you are talking.
- Better Confidence: Dental implants make you feel better about yourself by restoring and improving your smile.
- Better Oral Health: Dental implants preserve your jawbone just like real teeth. They are also easy to clean.
- Better Option: Dental implants are fixed unlike removable dentures. They also do not require reducing your other natural teeth to support a fixed bridge.
- Better Cost: Compared to dentures and bridges, dental implants are very durable and can last you a lifetime with proper care.
Why Choose the Philippines for Dental Implants?
If you are from another country and wish to travel abroad for dental implants and other dental work, here are some of the reasons why you should choose the Philippines:
1. Cost
The average cost of a single dental implant in Australia is $3,800 AUD while in the United States the average cost is $ 4,000 USD per tooth. Costs usually do not include the implant prosthetic. If you have multiple missing teeth, the total cost of replacing them with dental implants can reach several tens of thousands of dollars.
So what is the cost of having a dental implant in the Philippines?
The cost of a single dental implant in the Philippines with an implant crown ranges from $1,750 USD to $ 2,500 USD only. Discounts are also usually extended for multiple implant cases.
2. Travel
The Philippines is a top tourist destination in Asia. With more than 7,100 islands, the country abounds with pristine beaches, natural wonders and historic sites that you can visit on your trip. Top destinations like Boracay, Palawan, Bohol or Cebu are just an hour away from the capital of Manila.
Staying in Manila is also not a problem. There are numerous hotels you can choose from. Cheap hotels offer prices as low as $ 25 USD a night while high-end hotel prices are an average of $100 USD per night. If you are planning to stay longer, AIRBNB accommodations are also available throughout the metro.
3. Language
Understanding and communicating with your dentist is very important when having dental implants. One of the biggest advantages of having your dental implants in the Philippines is language. The Philippines is one of the largest English-speaking countries in the world. Most, if not all dentists in the Philippines are fluent with English.

What is the process of having a Dental Implant?
Basically, having a dental implant will require at least two visits within a span of six months if your case is ideal. If your case will require a bone graft and/or other procedures, the process may require at least three visits within a 1-year period.
1. Preliminary Treatment Plan
If you live abroad, and want to explore having your dental implants with us, you may first email us to request for an evaluation of your case by sending us a digital copy of your panoramic x-rays in advance.
Based on the x-rays, our dentists will be able to evaluate and recommend a preliminary treatment plan and quotation for you before you travel to the Philippines.
You must note, however, that the preliminary treatment plan based solely on the x-ray may change once the dentist sees you personally during the actual consultation.
2. Dental Implant Surgery/Placement
First visit – 10 to 12 days.
When you arrive in the country for your first appointment, the dentist will conduct a more thorough personal evaluation of your case. Additional diagnostic x-rays, scans or tests may be required before proceeding with the implant.
Once the dentist determines that you are an ideal candidate for dental implants, your implant surgery or placement can be scheduled immediately. The procedure will only take a day. A temporary flipper and/or a temporary crown will be provided to you to cover the implant site. You will be required to return to the clinic after 7 or 10 days after the surgery for a post-operative check up.
3. Dental Implant Crown
Second visit – 10 to 12 days.
Dental implants require 3-6 months to completely heal and integrate to your jawbone. After this period, you will be asked to return to the clinic for the installation or placement of the final implant crown or prosthetic.
On your visit, a cast or a scan will be done to fabricate your implant crown/s or prosthetics in a dental laboratory. Fabrication may take 7 to 10 days depending on the case. Once the implant prosthetics is finished, you will be asked to return for the installation of the implant prosthetic.
Congratulations on your new smile.
4. Dental Implants Requiring Bone Grafts and other Procedures
Dental implants require a good jawbone to hold and support the implants. If you have significant bone loss on the implant site, the dentist or surgeon will advise you to undergo a bone graft or bone augmentation first.
The procedure will take one visit and a post-operative follow up after 7 or 10 days. The bone graft will be allowed to heal for up to 6 months before you are asked to return.
On your next visit, the dentist will ask you to undergo new x-rays or scans to check the state of your bone graft. Once the dentist determines that the bone graft is successful, your implant surgery or placement can be scheduled immediately.
How to care for your Dental Implant?
Dental implants are like your real teeth. You must practice good oral hygiene. While the implants will never get cavities, it is important that you maintain good gum and bone health.
Brush your teeth two to three times a day, floss and, if prescribed, rinse with a mouthwash. Most importantly, you must visit a dentist at least twice a year for regular cleaning and check up.
How long will Dental Implants last?
Several studies indicate that dental implants can last up to 20-years or longer with good oral health, proper oral hygiene and care.
