Transcranial X-Ray

Specialized Imaging. A Deeper Look into TMJ and Jaw Health

When patients experience jaw pain, clicking sounds, or difficulty opening and closing their mouths, the issue often lies deeper than the teeth—it may involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). At Affinity Dental Clinics, we use a highly specialized diagnostic tool known as the Transcranial X-Ray to evaluate the TMJ and its surrounding structures.

If you’ve never heard of a Transcranial X-Ray, you’re not alone. But for people struggling with jaw discomfort, migraines, or bite issues, this advanced imaging technique can make all the difference in diagnosis and treatment.

What Is a Transcranial X-Ray?

A Transcranial X-Ray is a type of lateral skull X-ray that focuses on the temporomandibular joint—the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull, located just in front of your ears. This imaging allows your dentist or oral surgeon to see both the right and left TMJs clearly, in a closed-mouth and open-mouth position.

It captures the position, shape, and alignment of the jaw joints and the surrounding bone structures, helping us evaluate whether something is wrong—and if so, how to address it.

When Is a Transcranial X-Ray Needed?

Transcranial X-Rays are most commonly used in evaluating:

TMJ disorders (TMD)
• Chronic jaw pain or stiffness
• Clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
• Suspected arthritis in the TMJ
• Pre- and post-surgical evaluation of the joint
• Trauma to the jaw or side of the head
• Bite problems or facial asymmetry

Because this X-ray gives a view of the joint space, bony contours, and condyle position, it is an important tool in determining whether your TMJ is healthy or if there are signs of degeneration, displacement, or inflammation.

TMJ Pain Is More Common Than You Think

If you regularly experience:

• Pain near your ears
• Difficulty chewing
• Tension headaches
• Limited jaw movement
• A clicking or popping sound when opening your mouth

…you might be dealing with TMJ dysfunction, and a Transcranial X-Ray can help us figure out what’s going on.

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we take these symptoms seriously. TMJ issues can affect your overall quality of life, including how you eat, speak, and sleep. A proper diagnosis using a Transcranial X-Ray helps us avoid guesswork and plan a treatment that truly fits your needs.

Why Digital Makes a Difference

At Affinity Dental Clinics, all our X-rays—including Transcranial—are digital. That means you benefit from:

Our goal is to make your visit as comfortable, fast, and informative as possible. That’s why our clinics in Makati, BGC, Alabang, Ortigas, Parañaque, and Cebu are equipped with the latest digital radiography tools.

What to Expect During a Transcranial X-Ray

The procedure is simple and painless:

1️⃣
You’ll be seated or standing depending on the machine setup.
2️⃣
Your head is gently positioned for accurate imaging.
3️⃣
Two sets of X-rays are taken—closed jaw and open jaw.
4️⃣
The images are reviewed by your dentist or oral surgeon.

The entire process takes just a few minutes, and the insights it provides can be pivotal in solving long-standing jaw problems.

How We Use Transcranial X-Rays in Treatment Planning

A Transcranial X-Ray is never used in isolation. It is part of a comprehensive diagnostic approach, often used alongside:

• Clinical jaw assessments
• Bite analysis
CBCT scans (for 3D views)
Orthodontic evaluation
• Patient-reported symptoms and history

These images give our clinicians a clear window into the condition of your TMJ—whether it’s healthy, inflamed, displaced, or showing early signs of arthritis or wear. That way, we can offer appropriate treatment, which may include:

• Nightguards or occlusal splints
• Orthodontics to correct bite alignment
• Pain management therapies
• Lifestyle modifications
• Surgical consultation if needed
