Dental Sealants

A Simple, Painless Way to Prevent Cavities—For Kids and Adults Alike

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we believe that preventing cavities is always better than treating them. That’s why we offer Dental Sealants—a safe, effective, and non-invasive procedure that protects the teeth from decay, especially in hard-to-reach areas like molars and premolars.

Originally developed for children, dental sealants have become a trusted solution for adults too. Whether you’re a parent hoping to safeguard your child’s smile or an adult with deep grooves in your teeth that are prone to cavities, sealants may be the extra layer of protection you need.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made of tooth-colored resin or glass ionomer cement. They are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—the molars and premolars—where food particles and bacteria often settle.

These grooves and pits are difficult to clean thoroughly, especially for younger children or patients with poor oral hygiene habits. Sealants create a smooth, sealed surface that acts as a barrier against plaque, acid, and food particles.

Think of it as a shield for your tooth. It doesn’t replace brushing and flossing but adds an extra layer of protection to prevent cavities before they start.

Who Needs Dental Sealants?

For Children and Teens
Sealants are especially recommended for kids between the ages of 6 and 14—the years when their first and second permanent molars typically come in. Applying sealants at this stage can help reduce the risk of tooth decay during the cavity-prone years of childhood and adolescence.

For Adults
Yes, sealants aren’t just for kids! Adults without fillings or decay in their molars can also benefit from dental sealants. If you have deep grooves in your back teeth, dry mouth, or a history of frequent cavities, your dentist may recommend sealants as a preventive step.

For Special Needs Patients
Sealants can also be valuable for patients of any age with special health care needs or difficulty maintaining oral hygiene. They offer extra protection for those who might struggle with daily brushing and flossing routines.

When Should Dental Sealants Be Applied?

The best time to apply sealants is shortly after a tooth has fully erupted and before decay starts. For most children, this means:

• First Molars: Around age 6
• Second Molars: Around age 12

Our dentists at Affinity Dental Clinics check your child’s molars during their regular dental visits. If the teeth are healthy and free of decay, we may recommend applying sealants right away to protect them long-term.

The Dental Sealant Procedure

Fast, Painless, and Non-Invasive
Getting sealants is one of the simplest procedures in pediatric dentistry—and it usually takes just a few minutes per tooth.

Here’s what to expect:

1️⃣
Cleaning the Tooth
The dentist thoroughly cleans the surface of the molar to remove any plaque or debris.
2️⃣
Preparing the Surface
A special gel is applied to roughen the surface so the sealant can bond securely to the tooth.
3️⃣
Applying the Sealant
The tooth is dried, and the liquid sealant material is painted onto the grooves and pits of the molar.
4️⃣
Curing with Light
A special blue curing light is used to harden the sealant and lock it in place.

That’s it—no drilling, no injections, no discomfort.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

With proper care, dental sealants can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years. During regular dental checkups, your dentist will examine the sealants and reapply them if they become worn or chipped.

Sealants may wear down over time due to chewing, grinding, or acidic foods, but the good news is they can be easily touched up or reapplied if needed.

Do Dental Sealants Really Work?

Yes, and the science backs it up. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dental sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in the back teeth. These are the teeth where 9 out of 10 cavities occur in school-age children.

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we’ve seen the difference sealants make. Children with sealants are far less likely to return for fillings or extractions. It’s a simple measure that leads to a big impact on a child’s long-term oral health.

Are Dental Sealants Safe?

Absolutely. Dental sealants have been safely used for decades around the world. The materials used are biocompatible and are applied in such small amounts that they pose no risk to the patient. For added peace of mind, we use high-quality, BPA-free materials approved by international dental health authorities.

Combining Sealants with Other Preventive Treatments

Dental sealants are even more effective when combined with other preventive services offered at Affinity Dental Clinics:

Oral Prophylaxis – Routine cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
Fluoride Treatment – Strengthens enamel and adds resistance to decay
Oral Hygiene Education – Teaching kids proper brushing and flossing techniques

This trio of care—brushing, fluoride, and sealants—offers strong defense against decay during a child’s formative years and well into adulthood.
