Dental Fillings

Aesthetic, Safe, and Long-Lasting Solutions

At some point in our lives, many of us will need a dental filling. Whether it’s due to tooth decay, minor fractures, or the natural wear and tear of life, dental fillings are one of the most common—and most effective—ways to restore the health, strength, and appearance of your teeth.

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we understand that the decision to treat a tooth isn’t just about function—it’s about aesthetics, comfort, and long-term confidence. That’s why our approach to dental fillings is focused on precision, compassion, and quality, using advanced materials and techniques to create results that not only work but look beautiful and natural.

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are restorative materials used to repair teeth that have been damaged by cavities, minor cracks, or other forms of deterioration. When bacteria in the mouth erode enamel, a cavity (or hole) forms. Left untreated, this cavity can deepen, leading to pain, infection, or even tooth loss.

Fillings allow us to remove the decayed portion of the tooth and “fill in” the space with a biocompatible material. This restores the tooth’s structure, prevents further decay, and protects the inner tooth from bacteria.

When Are Dental Fillings Needed?

You may need a dental filling if you:

🔹 Have a visible hole or dark spot on your tooth
🔹 Feel pain when biting or chewing
🔹 Experience sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet food
🔹 Have chipped or worn edges due to grinding (bruxism)
🔹 Feel a rough or uneven surface with your tongue

The good news? Catching cavities early means we can use less invasive techniques—and your natural tooth can be preserved longer.

Types of Dental Fillings Offered at Affinity Dental Clinics

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we prioritize safety, comfort, and cosmetic excellence. We specialize in tooth-colored composite fillings, which have become the modern standard for most restorations.

Made from a blend of resin and fine glass particles, these fillings are color-matched to your natural tooth. They are perfect for front and back teeth because they are:

1. Aesthetic

They blend in seamlessly

2. Strong and Durable

Ideal for chewing surfaces

3. Conservative

Less natural tooth structure needs to be removed

4. Versatile

Used for cavities, chips, gaps, and minor reshaping

1. Diagnosis and Imaging

Your journey begins with a thorough clinical examination. We use digital periapical or panoramic X-rays to accurately detect cavities and assess the extent of decay. Transparency is part of our core values—we show you what we see so you can understand your condition and treatment options.

2. Cavity Removal and Tooth Preparation

Once the affected area is identified, the tooth is gently numbed to ensure a pain-free experience. Using precision rotary tools, our dentist carefully removes the decayed portion of the tooth, shaping the cavity for optimal bonding. We take care to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible—because less removal means a stronger, longer-lasting tooth.

3. Composite Placement and Light Curing

Next, we apply a safe bonding agent, followed by layers of tooth-colored composite resin. Each layer is hardened using a blue LED light, a process called light curing, which helps create a strong and durable bond to the tooth. This method also ensures a tight seal, minimizing the risk of bacteria entering the tooth and reducing post-treatment sensitivity.

4. Sculpting and Polishing

Once the final layer is in place, the dentist sculpts the resin to match the natural grooves and contours of your tooth. A smooth, high-polish finish is then achieved using gentle rotary tools. This final touch is what makes the filling virtually invisible and feels completely natural in your bite.

5. Final Result: A Restored, Natural-Looking Tooth

Our patients are often amazed at how natural their tooth looks—and how quickly they forget they even had a cavity in the first place.

Composite vs. Amalgam: A Healthier, More Aesthetic Choice

While silver (amalgam) fillings were once the standard, we now know that composite fillings offer many advantages:

Feature Composite Fillings Amalgam Fillings
Appearance Tooth-colored, blends in Metallic, highly visible
Bonding Bonds to enamel Does not bond — requires more drilling
Safety Mercury-free Contains mercury
Versatility Front & back teeth Usually back teeth only

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years or more. Their longevity depends on:

🔹 Tooth location and bite force
🔹 Size of the cavity
🔹 Oral habits (e.g., grinding or chewing ice)
🔹 Your at-home care and hygiene
