Post and Core

Rebuilding Teeth from the Inside Out

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we believe that every tooth saved is a small victory—especially when that tooth has already undergone extensive treatment. One of the essential procedures that often follows a Root Canal Treatment is a Post and Core, a foundational restoration that helps strengthen and rebuild a tooth that has lost much of its internal structure.

If you’re visiting us for endodontic care or have recently had a root canal, you may have heard your dentist mention the need for a Post and Core. Don’t worry—it’s not as complicated as it sounds. And more importantly, it’s a vital step in ensuring your tooth stays strong, functional, and long-lasting.

What is a Post and Core?

A Post and Core is a two-part dental procedure used to rebuild and support a severely damaged or root canal-treated tooth. Here’s how it works:

• The “Post” is a small, biocompatible rod (usually made of metal or fiber) inserted into the root canal of the tooth. It provides internal support and anchorage.
• The “Core” is a build-up of material that replaces the missing tooth structure above the gum line. It acts like the central foundation for placing a dental crown on top.

In simple terms, the Post and Core procedure prepares a compromised tooth to securely hold a crown, especially when there isn’t enough natural tooth structure left.

Why Might You Need a Post and Core?

After a Root Canal Treatment, the inside of your tooth has been cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. However, depending on how much healthy tooth remains, it may not be strong enough to support a crown on its own. This is particularly common if:

• The tooth was heavily decayed or fractured
• There’s extensive loss of structure due to previous restorations
• The tooth has been worn down over time

In these cases, your dentist may recommend a Post and Core to reinforce and restore the tooth’s strength and integrity before proceeding with the final crown.

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we always explain this clearly to our patients. We want you to understand why this step matters—not just for cosmetic reasons, but for your tooth’s long-term survival.

When is a Post and Core Not Needed?

It’s important to note that not every root canal-treated tooth needs a Post and Core. If there’s enough healthy tooth structure left, a traditional core build-up or crown may be sufficient.

That’s why we always assess each case individually. Our dentists will check:

• How much of your natural tooth is remaining
• The location of the tooth (front teeth often require less reinforcement than molars)
• Your bite forces
• Your treatment goals and budget

We’ll walk you through the options and help you make a decision that balances both function and value.

The Post and Core Procedure at Affinity Dental Clinics

Here’s what you can expect when getting a Post and Core in the Philippines at Affinity:

1️⃣
Evaluation and Planning
After root canal therapy, your dentist will assess your tooth with digital X-rays or Cone Beam CT Scans to determine whether a Post and Core is necessary.
2️⃣
Post Placement
If needed, a small space is prepared within the root canal. The post is then inserted and securely bonded into place.
3️⃣
Core Build-Up
Your dentist will rebuild the missing portion of the tooth using a durable composite or resin-based material, shaping it carefully to receive a crown.
4️⃣
Crown Preparation
Once the core is complete, the tooth is shaped to receive a final dental crown—usually made of zirconia, porcelain-fused materials, or other high-quality ceramics, depending on your needs.
5️⃣
Crown Fabrication and Placement
With the support of our in-house dental laboratory, we create custom, high-precision crowns that match your natural teeth in color, shape, and function.

Our Expertise: Restoring Teeth with Confidence

The Post and Core procedure is a small but crucial investment in the longevity of your restored tooth. The benefits include:

💪
Improved Strength and Stability – Provides structural reinforcement, especially for molars and premolars that bear heavy chewing forces
🔒
Secure Crown Retention – Allows your crown to be properly attached and stay in place long-term
🦷
Preserves the Natural Tooth – Reinforces the remaining structure, helping avoid tooth fracture or failure and reducing the need for extraction and replacement
Better Aesthetics and Function – Ensures your final crown looks natural, feels comfortable, and functions just like your other teeth
