Do you need a crown after root canal treatment?

After getting a root canal, a lot of people wonder whether they should get a dental crown or if their teeth are alright with none, considering they would no longer feel toothache in that part, anyway.

But that’s a common misconception. Here are the top 5 reasons why you should get a dental crown after a root canal.

Pre-existing damage left the tooth in weakened state

People undergo a root canal due to a pre-existing condition. While there are those who get a root canal even if their teeth only have little damage, many resort to the treatment when there is significant damage to the teeth.

Because the pre-existing damage left the tooth in weakened state, it would be prone to breaking. Thus, even if you might not feel the pain, a broken tooth is not good to look at, can cause wounds to your tongue and cheeks, and lead to further trouble.

Getting a dental crown, along with a dental filling, helps your teeth become strong again.

Teeth are more fragile after root canal treatment

During a root canal, the dentist creates an access cavity in order to treat the affected roots. The hollow portion can already make teeth more brittle and fragile.

But there are times when the dentist needs to remove greater amounts of the tooth structure to reach the canal that’s difficult to find. This adds further stress to your teeth.

Aside from a dental filling to strengthen your teeth again, a dental crown will protect it from future damage.

Dentin strength might have been compromised

Even if your enamel is mostly intact during the treatment, the dentin could be badly damaged by the chemicals used by the dentist when cleaning the hollow part of your tooth before the root canal.

Because dentin comprises the bulk of your teeth, damage could eventually lead to your teeth becoming brittle and easy to crack. Again, such could be solved by getting a dental filling but a dental crown will protect your teeth better. Getting both is ideal in most cases.

To reduce risk of re-infection

The infection or inflammation that led to your tooth decay can have a variety of causes, but during the root canal treatment, the dentist removes the pulp from your tooth, cleans then disinfects and shapes the root canals, and then places a filling to seal the space.

If you don’t get a dental crown on the treated teeth, there’s a possibility that contaminants in your mouth could lead to re-infection. When that happens, the root canal treatment will fail – and you paid a lot of money for that one!

For added longevity and durability

Of course, the need for a dental crown and the exact restoration requirements will depend on a number of factors, including the actual condition of your teeth. And it’s actually possible that the dentist was able to do the root canal treatment through a conservative access cavity, leaving most of the teeth intact.

Still, for longevity and more durability of your treated teeth, getting that dental crown is still highly recommended.
