Composite Veneers

Composite veneer or direct veneer is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses composite resin to improve the size, shape and color of your teeth.  Composite resin is the same material used by dentists for tooth colored dental fillings. It is applied, bonded, sculpted and cured directly on your teeth.

Composite veneers can be used to address the following problems:

  • Discoloration of teeth.
  • Worn down teeth.
  • Chipped or broken teeth.
  • Uneven or irregularly shaped teeth.
  • Diastema or gaps between teeth.

Porcelain Veneers VS Composite Veneers

Both porcelain and composite veneers are great cosmetic dental procedures that can drastically improve your smile. Which one is right for you?

1. LOWER COST – The biggest advantage of composite veneers is cost. It is at least 65% cheaper than porcelain veneers.

2. IMMEDIATE RESULTS – Composite veneers are actually directly applied and sculpted on your teeth. It can be finished in a day or two. Porcelain veneers need to be fabricated in a dental laboratory and will require several visits before it is finally installed.

3. LESS INVASIVE – Porcelain veneers requires shaving your teeth’s enamel in order to fit the fabricated veneer. Composite veneers are less invasive. It requires very minimal tooth preparation.

4. REVERSIBILITY – The greatest advantage of composite veneers is its reversibility. Because preparation of the teeth is very minimal, your natural teeth are not permanently altered. Composite materials can easily be removed and replaced as needed.

5. DURABILITY – Porcelain veneers are stronger than composite veneers because they are made of porcelain. Porcelain veneers can last an average of 10 to 15 years.

This doesn’t mean that composite veneers are weak. They are actually as durable and as strong as your dental fillings. Composite veneers can last from 5 to 7 years before needing a touch up or replacement.

6. TRANSLUCENCY – Composite veneers are more opaque than porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers have better translucency that is more similar to natural teeth

7. STAIN RESISTANCE – Porcelain veneers are stain resistant and do not discolor over time. Composite veneers are more porous like your real teeth and therefore susceptible to staining and discoloration.

Can’t decide which one is for you?  The best way to determine what is best for you is for you to visit a dentist.

Discuss your objectives and considerations. If cost is your main consideration then composite veneers may be right for you. If cost is not a problem and your concern is aesthetics and durability then porcelain veneers might be a better solution for you.

Whatever you choose, both composite and porcelain veneers are beautiful options that can dramatically change your smile.
