5 Tips to Speed Up Wisdom Teeth Recovery

Almost everyone has told you their own version of their story: the dreaded wisdom teeth removal.

Wisdom teeth are nonessential teeth which erupt during the teenage years and often carry on through adult life if left untreated. A common characteristic of wisdom teeth is to grow in awkward angles, often pushing essential teeth out of place, leading to difficulties in eating, and in daily life in general due to pain.

As such, most people make it a point to get their wisdom teeth removed when, or even before, it becomes impacted.

Here are some tips to have a speedy, painless recovery after your wisdom teeth extraction.

1. Keep your head elevated

When resting, lying down, or sitting down, make it a point to always keep your head elevated, to an upwards of 45 degrees.

This may be achieved through stacking pillows or by resting on a recliner.

This is because the blood vessels and blood volume near the wound may be affected when lying flat, which may rapture the wound.

2. Apply ice near the extraction site

Prepare ice packs to place over your cheeks during the day of the extraction.

Make sure to keep the ice pack near the site of the wisdom teeth extraction to maximize its healing effect. Avoid exposing this area to heat.

3. Massage your jaw joints

As wisdom teeth extraction keeps your mouth wide open due to its far off position inside the mouth, there is a tendency for your mouth and jaws to get tired.

Place your fingers near the opening of each ear to find your jaw joints, and massage this area from time to time.

4. Always keep your mouth fresh

Never let your mouth run dry, for this may develop bacteria, or even cause problems for the newly-extracted area

5. Drink cold coconut water

Coconut water aids in blood chemistry while supplying essential electrolytes to keep blood sugar levels stable in the absence of food, which you may not be able to consume for several days.

The temperature of this drink will likewise help aid in keeping your mouth moist and cold, which helps the mouth recover faster.
