Braces vs Invisalign: What Should I Get?
Braces and Invisalign are both used to straighten and align teeth to their desired positions. And because both processes are similar in goals, questions about the differences often pop up.
Even though braces and Invisalign aims to fix almost the same complications, one is better than the other, depending on the specifics of your situation. Braces utilize metal brackets that are glued to the teeth, and held together by wires and elastic bands. Meanwhile, Invisalign uses near-invisible trays that are placed on your teeth, to nudge them little by little to your desired final position. Here are some aspects which may help you decide on which treatment to take:
Lifestyle
Braces may be preferred by those that do light, desk-bound office work, where their teeth is not a deal breaker. Those who play sports must stay away from braces, for they may damage the teeth, gums, or even the lips.
For those in sales, teaching, or other visually-connected fields of work, Invisalign is a life saver, for it allows you to function as normal, without being overly-conscious about your teeth.
Convenience
Braces are permanently stuck on your teeth for the rest of the treatment, while invisalign may be removed for a few hours each day.
Treatment period
Depending on the patient’s condition, braces need to be worn 24 hours, 7 days a week for up to two years, while invisalign has to be worn for 20-22 hours a day, from 6 to 12 months.
Maintenance
Braces need to brushed alongside your teeth — keeping the wires clean is a must, while invisalign trays may be cleaned by rinsing them in lukewarm water.
Adjustment Appointments
Braces need to be adjusted once every month, while aligners need to be changed every two weeks to adapt to the movements of the teeth.
Advantages
Braces are usually preferred when addressing more complex issues. There is likewise less self-discipline needed because braces are permanently fixed to your teeth until the treatment ends. Braces can also be cleaned alongside regular teeth brushing, so there is less maintenance to be done.
Invisalign, on the other hand, is invisible. Ideal for those that normally do public speaking a lot, or where their visuals are considered vital for work. They are also removable, which is great for adjustments, short breaks, or during meals. Invisalign doesn’t hurt, as compared to the wires from braces.
Disadvantages
Ask almost everyone, and they will say that braces are painful due to wires and the restrictions on the teeth. Eating certain kinds of food may also be tough.
Invisalign must be removed before eating or drinking anything. Maintenance is a lot more demanding, for you need to remove the aligners before every meal, then brush before wearing them again.
