Endodontics
Not long ago, the only option available for patients that were desperately suffering from a badly damaged and decayed or injured tooth was tooth extraction. A lot of people lost their teeth unnecessarily.
Today, advancements in endodontic treatments make it possible for you to save your teeth and avoid extraction. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in treatments that focuses on your tooth roots and dental pulp.
Why save your real teeth?
Having missing teeth can ruin your smile. The gap created by missing teeth will also cause your other teeth to shift. Your ability to speak properly and to eat and chew food is also affected or compromised.
Saving your real teeth with endodontic treatment is also more cost-effective and cheaper than replacing your missing teeth with dentures and implants.
Nothing looks, feels or functions like your natural tooth. No denture, bridge or implant will look, feel and function as well as a natural tooth.
What are the Endodontic Treatments available?
Your tooth can be saved with endodontic treatment in majority of cases. When you experience symptoms of swelling or pain, visit us immediately. Here are some of the endodontic treatments available in our clinic.
1. Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is a procedure that removes the infected, injured or dead pulp and nerves from your tooth.

2. Endodontic Retreatment
Root canal treatment has a success rate of 95% and in many cases, your saved tooth can last you for a long time. For cases that fail, the dentist will recommend an endodontic retreatment.
Endodontic retreatment will require reopening your tooth and removing the filling materials placed in your previous root canal procedure. This is to allow your dentist to inspect the causes of the failure and treat any signs of new infection.
Once the infection is addressed and once the problem or cause has been identified, the dentist will repeat the process of root canal treatment: cleaning, filling and restoration.
3. Apicoectomy
If you continue to have an infection even after an endodontic retreatment, the dentist would most likely suspect a problem with the tip of the tooth root and recommend an Apicoectomy.
An apicoectomy is both a surgical and an endodontic procedure. To access the roots, the dentist must make a surgical incision in your gum to lift the tissue away from the tooth and bone. The dentist may need to drill through the bone to expose the roots of the tooth.
Once accessible, the dentist will proceed to remove the infected tissue and the apex of the tooth. The end of the canal will be cleaned and sealed before stitching back the gums. Stiches may dissolve on it’s own or removed by the dentist after a week.
