Wisdom Teeth and Oral Health
You will know when your wisdom teeth are coming when there are a lot of symptoms appearing. Your gums might swell, you will feel jaw pain, or worse, you might have a hard time opening your mouth. Wisdom teeth are not that bad but they are not that essential too.
The wisdom tooth serves as an additional molar that aids in the chewing process. There are a total of four teeth that will appear once you reach your teenage years. Some people appreciate their third molars while others would have these extracted.
There are a lot of instances when an individual decides to get their tooth extracted. One of these is tooth decay. You may now be wondering, how is this possible?
1. The food that you eat can result in tooth decay.
Your dentist might have already told you this but the food you eat have an impact on the condition of your teeth, including your wisdom teeth. Whenever you intake starches and sugar, these can remain on your teeth. Bacteria will then form and begin to target your enamel layer, making small holes or cavities. If this continues, the health of your teeth will deteriorate.
2. Poor brushing
Poor brushing is common. Most people do not even know that they have a bad brushing habit. Some examples are brushing too hard, brushing side to side, and using the wrong brush, among others. If you have a poor brushing process, you might want to change that now, or you will have to face the fact that your teeth are already on the verge of decaying.
How do you prevent these? Remember to gently brush your teeth. Do not brush your teeth from side to side. Instead, brush in small circles. Buy soft toothbrushes and be sure to replace them every 3 months. These are just some of the ways to prevent poor brushing.
3. The wisdom tooth is hard to reach
In some cases, your wisdom teeth might grow in an unexpected location or an area that your brush cannot reach properly. You might think that you are brushing your teeth properly but end up getting tooth decay. This can be a tricky situation because as long as it is unreachable, you will continuously get decayed teeth.
In fact, some people would opt to extract their teeth to prevent having tooth decay. If this option suits you, be sure that you consult your dentist first before doing the procedure. Your dentist can guide you and prepare you before the surgery.
4. Lack of flossing will increase plaque
If you do not floss, plaque will stay in between your gumline and teeth. Remember, plaque is not your best friend. When plaque attacks, it can remove the minerals in your tooth’s outer enamel which can lead to cavities. If left untreated, it can continue to your dentin, which is the next layer of your teeth.
When flossing, gently glide the floss up and down. Do not try to glide the floss into your gums as it could bruise your gums as well. Once the floss reaches the gums, curve it at the base of your tooth. This forms a C shape.
5. Infected wisdom teeth may contribute to the decay of surrounding teeth
There are people who started to experience tooth decay after their wisdom teeth grew. There might be various reasons for that so it would be better to consult your dentist other than just letting it be. Tooth decay will not only impact your teeth but your overall health.
It can lead to lung disease, social anxiety, and even stroke. You will have a hard time speaking and swallowing as well. It is not something that you can ignore. In the event that you believe you have tooth decay, immediately consult your dentist and book an appointment.
Affinity Dental Clinics offer treatments for your tooth decay. The chosen treatment will depend on the severity of the decay. It is recommended to get a consultation before you decide which treatment to go with.
While it is true that your wisdom teeth are vulnerable to decay, there are still ways you can prevent this from happening. You can use fluoride toothpaste, floss your teeth regularly, limit your starch and sugar intake, and quit smoking. It would also be ideal to see your dentist for regular check-ups.
