Oral Prophylaxis

Because A Clean Smile Is a Healthy Smile

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we believe that preventive care is the foundation of lifelong oral health. One of the most essential and effective preventive treatments we offer is Oral Prophylaxis, commonly known as a dental cleaning.

Our approach to Oral Prophylaxis is rooted in clinical excellence, patient comfort, and personalized care. We are proud to offer two types of cleaning methods: the traditional mechanical approach and the modern AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis using advanced Swiss technology.

Primarily, this article focuses on the traditional method—still preferred by many patients for its familiarity, thoroughness, and effective results.

What Is Oral Prophylaxis?

Oral Prophylaxis refers to the professional cleaning of the teeth and gums to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar (calculus). If left untreated, plaque and tartar can lead to bad breath, cavities, and more serious conditions like gingivitis and periodontal disease.

The procedure is typically recommended every 6 months for patients with healthy gums and teeth. However, patients with gum issues or higher risk factors may require more frequent visits.

The Traditional Oral Prophylaxis Procedure

1. Assessment and Preparation

Before beginning the procedure, your dentist will assess your mouth. We check for:

🔹 Plaque and tartar buildup
🔹 Signs of gum inflammation or bleeding
🔹 Tooth sensitivity or exposed roots
🔹 Any underlying conditions needing further attention

Whether it’s a child’s first visit or a senior exploring options for missing teeth, consultations allow us to personalize your care based on your goals and circumstances.

2. Scaling

The first and most important step of traditional Oral Prophylaxis is scaling, which involves removing hardened tartar (calculus) above and below the gumline. We use ultrasonic scalers that vibrate to loosen tartar, and water sprays to wash it away. Additionally, in areas where more precision is needed, we use manual scalers.

This process is completely safe and helps eliminate the harmful bacteria that can cause gum inflammation and bad breath.

3. Polishing

Once your teeth are free of plaque and tartar, we proceed to polishing. A flavored, gritty polishing paste is applied with a soft rubber cup attached to a slow-speed handpiece. This step smooths the tooth surface and removes any residual stains from coffee, tea, or food.

Not only does this leave your teeth feeling clean and smooth, but it also makes it harder for plaque to stick to your teeth in the future.

4. Fluoride Treatment (Optional)

If needed or requested, we can apply a topical fluoride gel or varnish after your cleaning. Fluoride strengthens enamel, helps prevent decay, and is especially useful for patients with sensitivity or high caries risk.

Why Our Consultations Are Different

🔹 Familiarity and comfort
Some patients feel reassured by the scraping sound of a scaler and the feel of traditional tools.
🔹 Thoroughness
Traditional scaling with hand instruments allows the dentist to focus precisely on problem areas.
🔹 Proven effectiveness
Decades of use have shown that traditional prophylaxis effectively removes calculus and prevents gum disease.
🔹 Personal preference
At Affinity Dental Clinics, we respect your comfort. If you prefer this method, we’re happy to provide it.

Who Can Benefit from Traditional Oral Prophylaxis?

Traditional cleaning is recommended for:

🔹 Patients with light to moderate tartar buildup
🔹 Those with healthy gums and no active periodontal disease
🔹 Patients who prefer the conventional approach to cleaning
🔹 Individuals with sensitive teeth or soft tissue concerns

Your dentist will always assess your condition and advise on the most suitable cleaning method.

Comfort and Care at Every Step

We understand that dental cleanings can make some patients feel anxious. That’s why at Affinity Dental Clinics, we go out of our way to ensure comfort and care during your visit. Our clinics are designed to feel calm and relaxing, and our team is trained to be gentle and patient.

If you have tooth sensitivity, we take precautions such as adjusting the water temperature or using hand instruments in sensitive areas. You can always let us know if you’re uncomfortable—our goal is to make your cleaning experience as smooth and reassuring as possible.

How Often Should You Get Oral Prophylaxis?

Most patients benefit from a cleaning every 6 months, but your dentist may recommend a different schedule if:

🔹 You have braces or orthodontic appliances
🔹 You are prone to gum disease or tartar buildup
🔹 You have medical conditions that affect oral health, such as diabetes
🔹 You are a smoker or heavy coffee/tea drinker

A personalized schedule will be created for you based on your needs.

Oral Prophylaxis vs. Deep Cleaning

It’s important to distinguish traditional Oral Prophylaxis from Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning). The latter is a more advanced procedure used to treat periodontal disease and involves cleaning deeper pockets under the gums. On the other hand, Oral Prophylaxis is preventive and intended for patients without advanced gum issues.

If during your cleaning we detect signs of gum disease, we will advise you on further treatment such as Periodontics or AIRFLOW® therapy depending on your needs.

Traditional Cleaning vs. AIRFLOW®: Your Choice

At Affinity Dental Clinics, we offer both Traditional Oral Prophylaxis and AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis, a modern, gentler technique using warm water and fine powder to remove biofilm.

We encourage you to choose what’s right for you:

🔹 If you prefer the tried-and-tested feel of traditional scaling, we’re here to provide it with skill and care.
🔹 If you want a quieter, faster, and more comfortable option, AIRFLOW® may be ideal.

The important thing is that you feel safe, respected, and cared for—because that’s what dental care should be.
