Dentures are removable plastic, acrylic, and porcelain replacements for lost teeth and the tissues connected to it. Good dentures should look and feel like genuine teeth and gums.
There are two kinds of dentures: complete and partial ones. Complete dentures replace the entirety of the teeth, while partial dentures act as fillers for spaces created by missing teeth.
Do I need dentures?
A common misconception is that dentures are just for the elderly. This is completely false, as dentures may be custom-made for anyone who loses permanent teeth at any age. Partial dentures may be used by those who only lose a couple of teeth, and are probably not yet suitable to have complete dentures.
What is the process in getting dentures?
When the gums have healed from tooth extractions, your dentist is now able to examine your mouth and teeth.
The process takes around one month, stretched over five appointments, which will tackle the following:
- Diagnosis of mouth, teeth, and gums
- A replica of the mouth through a wax bite
- Temporary dentures are issued for a trial fit
- Final dentures are issued
- Minor adjustments
What precautions should I follow after getting dentures?
It should be noted that new dentures may feel a little bit weird, and may take a while to get used to. The ability to speak and eat solid food may take from a couple of hours to a few days to be mastered, but some practice will help.
How do I take care of dentures?
- Brush and clean your dentures daily, using dentist-prescribed equipment.
- Do not sterilize dentures with boiling water.
- Do not brush your partial dentures along with your natural teeth — they should be handled differently.
- Dental adhesives may be prescribed for new wearers, as it helps keep the dentures in place, specially when the wearer is still getting used to it.
- Soak dentures in its solution or water when you remove it.
- Designate a spot for your dentures so you may not misplace it.
- After your first two weeks of continuous wearing of dentures, make sure to remove your dentures when you rest at night.
