How do you cure teeth grinding?

If you have ever snapped out of a tough task, or woke up from a deep slumber with teeth and jaws that hurt, you might be unconsciously grinding your teeth.

What is teeth grinding?

Formally known as bruxism, teeth grinding is the occasional and rhythmic clenching of the jaws and teeth which causes pressure in the mouth. It usually occurs while asleep, but also manifests itself while a person is deeply focused on a single activity or challenging work, like driving, reading, playing video games, or lifting weights.

Symptoms

According to the Bruxism Association, teeth grinders are three times more likely to suffer from headaches than those who don’t. MedlinePlus report suggests that muscle aches, stiffness of the shoulders, and sleeping disorders may be linked to teeth grinding. In any case, teeth are easily worn down due to its more than frequent use. Common causes of teeth grinding are lifestyle factors, depression, and stress. Consult a dentist or a certified medical professional to develop a treatment plan which suits your needs.

Treatment

grinding

The most common way to combat teeth grinding is the use of dental night guards, which are teeth covers that are worn during sleep, which prevents the teeth, jaws, and the mouth from grinding or excessive stress.

Medications containing amphetamines (commonly for ADHD and sleeping disorders) should be avoided, or at the very least, taken with the lowest effective dose. You may consult your doctor regarding other medicine that could be prescribed to avoid intake of these.

Avoid or reduce consumption of alcohol, coffee, soda, and chocolate. This makes the body giddy, which causes unwanted teeth grinding. Avoid chewing gums or any other snack that needs to be constantly chewed. These conditions your muscles to get used to grinding your teeth.

Self-discipline and self-awareness may help you on your road to recovery from teeth grinding. Make it a habit to place the tip of your tongue between your front teeth. This helps the teeth and jaws to relax. Soon enough, it will become intuitive and automatic.
