General Dentistry

General dentistry is the foundation of every dental practice. It primarily involves simple and inexpensive dental procedures that promote and maintain your oral hygiene and health.

Keep your teeth clean, disease-free and in tip-top shape by regularly visiting your dentist for these procedures:

  • Oral Prophylaxis
An oral prophylaxis is the most basic dental procedure that every man, woman or child needs to maintain their oral health. It is a dental cleaning procedure that removes the build up of plaque and tartar on the surfaces of your teeth to prevent cavities from developing.Brushing alone is not enough to clean your teeth. Visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine oral prophylaxis.
  • Air Prophylaxis
If you smoke, drink a lot of coffee, tea or wine, your teeth would most likely have a lot of stubborn stains. If you want to give your teeth an extra shine, ask your dentist to finish off your routine oral prophylaxis with air polishing. An air prophylaxis or air polishing is a procedure that removes extrinsic stain and deposits on your teeth. The air polisher uses pressurized air, a special powder and water to remove plaque biofilm and stains from the surfaces of your teeth making it look instantly lighter and shinier.
  • Tooth-Colored Fillings
Dental fillings restore the damage caused by tooth decay. The process involves removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area, and then restoring it with a filling material. The filling prevents the decay from further developing and progressing.Dental Amalgam or “silver fillings” (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc) were traditionally used to fill cavities. Silver fillings are sturdy and lasts a very long time but concerns over its safety and its poor aesthetics have led to its decline over recent years.Today, with advances in technology, tooth-colored fillings are now available and more widely used to fill cavities. Tooth-colored composite fillings are great because they blend with the color of your natural teeth. Aside from filling cavities, they are also popularly used cosmetically to change the size, color and shape of teeth.
  • Fluoride Treatment
The tooth’s enamel is made of mineral crystals. The enamel loses its minerals when bacteria that cause plaque produce acids in your mouth. This process is called demineralization. Extensive loss of minerals eventually leads to tooth decay. To help stop or reverse the process of demineralization, ask your dentist about having Topical Fluoride Treatment on your next dental visit. Fluoride can be used to strengthen teeth. It can also be used to protect the outer enamel layer of the teeth against the acids caused by sugars and plaque..
